Suite M, in Half Moon Bay.  Volunteers of the HMBIM join with many others from the community to make the event happen, receive a FREE HMBIM shirt, and enter into a chance to win one of several local business giveaways.

"BRAZZLE BERRY is proud to support and be a part of the 2012 Half Moon Bay International Marathon event," said Barry Brazzle (or Dave Seaton?), Chief Berry Officer. "We recognize the amazing contribution the HMBIM is making again in 2012 and we are happy to entice people to come join in the fun with the best frozen yogurt around!"

"The HMBIM is very appreciative of BRAZZLE BERRY's support to sponsor the Volunteer Drive," said Eric Vaughan, HMBIM Executive Director. "In 2012 we're contributing over $1mm of direct economic benefit to the Coastside and the greater Bay Area by supporting the athletes who are traveling to the race, and we want the community to come join the fun and volunteer!"

The 2nd running of the sold-out HMBIM, to be held September 23, 2012,  features 1000 athletes from 35 states and 6 countries, along with world renowned athlete and author, Dean Karnazes, as the official guest of the race. The all volunteer force works together to ensure the race exceeds everyone's expectations, and sets a great example for Half Moon Bay as a community event. About the Half Moon Bay International Marathon:

Featuring "26.2 Miles of Running Heaven", the Half Moon Bay International Marathon (HMBIM) was founded in 2011 to showcase the unique beauty of the California coast along with some of the best weather a marathon athlete could ever hope for. The inaugural event in 2011 featured athletes from 25 states and 4 countries and sold out in two months despite very little promotion. An official Boston Qualifier event sanctioned by the USA Track and Field organization, the HMBIM also focused on creating an eco-friendly event to consider the precious coastal community and worked to attain official status with the Council for Responsible Sport, receiving the coveted Gold Certification from this organization in the Event's very first year. The HMBIM features a full and half marathon and 10k and 5k events all on the same day.

Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival

The Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival is an annual festival held in the coastside community of Half Moon Bay, California for one weekend during pumpkin harvest season. It is one of the oldest and largest local festivals in California. Proceeds go to local civic causes and to the beautification of the downtown area of Half Moon Bay. There is no admission charge for the event.

The annual event is held in October. Columbus Day Monday is the Safeway World Champion Pumpkin Weigh-in contest. The Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival is a two day event held the following Saturday and Sunday each year. Festival hours are from 9 AM to 5 PM both Saturday and Sunday.

Locations

The festival is located in downtown Half Moon Bay on Main Street between Miramontes and Spruce Streets. The Great Pumpkin Parade is held at Noon on Saturday and runs East along Miramontes, North on Main St, and West on Mill Street. There are two Music Stages, one at the South entrance and one located next to the Food Court in the IDES grounds. A Family Stage is located at 620 Main Street. The associated Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-In is located on the IDES Grounds at 735 Main Street on Columbus Day, the Monday prior to the festival.

History

The Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival began in 1971 with the formation of the Main Street Beautification Committee. The group was formed to raise funds for the revitalization of Main Street, which was beginning to show signs of decay. With an abundance of pumpkin patches in the area, the committee organized an old-fashioned harvest-style pumpkin festival. The first festival attracted 30,000 people. That year only one non-profit organization offered food for sale. The festival now includes dozens of local non-profit groups operating food and game booths, selling everything from pumpkin pie to linguisa sandwiches. Proceeds go to various civic and local causes and have included the construction of two parks, multiple scholarship funds, the installation of old-fashioned downtown street lights, the underground wiring of Main Street, and the renovation of City Hall.

The James Johnston House

File:James Johnston House, Higgins-Purisima Rd., Half Moon Bay, CA 10-30-2011 12-13-34 PM.JPG
The James Johnston House, located on a rolling Half Moon Bay hillside overlooking the Pacific, is an architectural gem hidden in plain sight. It is also one of the rarest historic houses on the California coast, a "Yankee-style" white saltbox building constructed by Johnston for his wife, Petra Maria de Jara, between 1853-55. After languishing in a state of poor repair for years, local conservationists formed a foundation in 1971 to preserve this amazing structure, which is open the third Saturday a month from 11 AM - 3 PM for guided tours. There is also an annual holiday boutique two weekends in November where the rooms are all decorated and local vendors sell arts and crafts.  If you are lucky enough to be in the area when the house is open, you will be treated to a fascinating glimpse into Bay area history during the decades that followed the California gold rush.

Most people will drive by on Highway 1 without ever noticing this famous "white house of Half Moon Bay." We only stumbled across it while shopping one Saturday on Main Street and followed a few signs directing us to the parking lot on Higgins-Purissima Road (close to the HMB fire station). The rooms inside this gleaming white, green-shuttered homestead are furnished with some original items donated by the family as well as contemporary pieces from the late 19th century. Stop and admire the rose garden, the mother-in-law's personal chapel, the Victorian parlor, the kitchen and pantry, and the upstairs bedrooms. There is also a short video to watch and photos from the renovation process. The surrounding fields are still being farmed, making this place seem like living history. The tour guides, many of whom dress in period costume, are incredibly nice to visitors and staff a small gift shop that helps to raise money to support the on-going restorations. The foundation's web site provides all the relevant details for planning your visit and gives additional insight into the history of the Johnston family and the renovation process.

Another historical property from the 1850s is just down the road: the Burleigh H. Murray Ranch State Park , which has a unique 2-story dairy barn that makes for a pleasant short hike when the weather is right.

The James Johnston House sits on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, east of Route One, just south of the city of Half Moon Bay. Isolated, its silhouette is a remarkable sight against the rolling hillsides golden brown until the winter rains turns them green. The classic New England saltbox (two stories in front, one in back) was built by '49er pioneer James Johnston between 1853-1855, for his Californiano bride, Petra Maria de Jara. One of the first white men to visit the Coastside, Johnston (1813-1879) saw Candelario Miramontes's magnificent Rancho de San Benito and in 1853 purchased 1,162 acres from Guadalupe Briones, Miramontes's widow, for $14,000. His grand scheme and dream of a proper Yankee house, the center of an eastern-style dairy ranch, became real as he sent his brothers, Thomas and John, back to Ohio to round up a herd of eastern dairy cows and with brother William drive them across the country to "Spanish Town."

The Robert Mills Dairy Barn

File:Robert Mills Dairy Barn, Higgins Purissima Rd., Half Moon Bay, CA 10-30-2011 1-11-18 PM.JPG
National Register #90000120
Robert Mills Dairy Barn
AKA Burleigh Murray Park
Higgins Purisima Road
Half Moon Bay
Built 1889

The Gold Rush lured Robert Mills from England to San Francisco where he worked as a glazier. His projects included William Ralston's Palace Hotel and his home in Belmont. Like most of the men who prospered during the Gold Rush, Mr. Mills earned his money from trade, not gold. By 1862, he had saved enough to buy 1,100 acres in this secluded valley south of San Francisco.
During the next several decades, Mr. Mills built a house, a dairy barn and other dependencies to create a ranch. The landmark dairy barn, built in 1889, was originally over two hundred feet long and housed more than one hundred cows as well as tenants who had immigrated from England, Ireland, Italy and Portugal.
The ranch remained in the family for over a century until Mr. Mills' grandson and heir, Burleigh Hall Murray, died in 1978. His estate donated the property to the California Department of Parks and Recreation the following year.

William Adam Simmons House

File:William Adam Simmons House, 751 Kelly Ave., Half Moon Bay, CA 10-30-2011 11-44-08 AM.JPG
The William Adam Simmons House in Half Moon Bay derives its significance
under criteria A and C from the fact that it is one of only three
remaining residences constructed in the 1860s during an important period
of Anglo-European settlement and up-building of San Mateo County's first
major town. It is also significant under criterion C as one of two
remaining structures in Half Moon Bay to employ wooden slab wall construction.

It is significant under criterion B because of the
contributions made to the community by William Adam Simmons, its builder
and Half Moon Bay's first undertaker, and his son Frederick Alien
Simmons, who served as San Mateo County's Half Moon Bay constable and
deputy sheriff for forty years. Both father and son occupied the
Simmons family residence during the productive years of their lives.
All physical changes that have been made over time to the Simmons
property are the product of one family in its evolution and growth. The
William Adam Simons House should qualify for listing in the National
Register at the local level of significance.

Half Moon Bay was originally known as San Benito. Much of the town we know today was developed on the Mexican land grant, Rancho Arroyo de los Pilarcitos, awarded to Candelario Miramontes in 1841. Miramontes, a soldier at the Presidio of San Francisco was the first Mexican citizen to occupy the area. He constructed an adobe dwelling on the south bank of Pilarcitos Creek for his large family and with thirty head of cattle and horses began cultivating five acres of land.
During the War with Mexico between 1846-1848, a number of Spanish speaking families from Verb a Buena and Mission Dolores sought the relative isolation of the San Mateo County coastside to avoid the conflict.

With the ensuing Gold Rush, others moved to San Benito to get away from the influx of Anglo/European settlers. By the mid-1850s when the extranjeros or forigners found the fertile coastal terraces, the settlement of San Benito consisted of about seven adobe homes, none of which remain today.

Candelario Miramontes died in 1846. By 1853 his heirs began selling parcels from the original grant to the newcomers. The first San Mateo County tax assessment records in 1857 show native Caiifornians and the "foreigners" matched at nineteen each. By that time, San Benito had given way to the name Spanishtown, indicative of the original ethnic makeup of the population.

The Anglo/European arrivals purchased or leased farming land in and around the settlement and began to build up the commercial and industrial base of the community. In 1863 Estanislao Zaballa surveyed and layed out the Spanishtown Plat, creating a gridiron pattern on the land in the tradition of American town planning that remains today. In spite of major difficulties in transporting produce to market because of the rugged physical location of the region, Spanishtown flourished and grew. The 1870 census showed Spanishtown to be the most populous township in San Mateo County.

In 1874, the town's name was officially changed for the last time to Half Moon Bay. By that time there was a full compliment of general stores, hotels, and saloons a lumber yard, flour mill, wagon & plow manufacturing facilities, blacksmith shops, a brewery and churches.

It was in this period that William Adam Simmons arrived in Half Moon Bay in 1864. Simmons was a native of New York State where he was born in 1838. He came to California by way of the Isthmus of Panama. Early census records show him as a carpenter by trade. San Mateo County assessment files indicate that he purchased 50 acres of land near Half Moon Bay where he engaged in farming. In 1865 he constructed the house at 751 Kelly Street. How long Simmons continued to farm is unknown, but with the rapid development of Half Moon Bay his skills as a carpenter soon came into demand. The only other identified builder in the l860's was J.W. Dawson.

Pillar Point Harbor

 File:Pillar Point Harbor aerial view.jpg
The Pillar Point Harbor at the northern edge of Half Moon Bay offers a protected landing for boats and provides other marine infrastructure. In the late 1980s a new master plan was developed for the Harbor. A variety of fish species have been identified in the harbor area. The most abundant fish include flatfish, particularly the speckled sanddab (Citharichthys stigmaeus) and the commercially important English sole (Parophrys vetulus), several species of rockfish (Sebastes sp.) with boccacio (S. paucispinis) most abundant, many members of the surfperch family, the most abundant being shiner (Cymanogaster aggregata) and dwarf surfperches (Micrometrus minimus), and the commercially important Pacific herring (Clupea harengus). Smaller populations of many other species, including significant commercial or sport species such as various surfperch, flatfish including halibut (Paralichthys californicus), lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus), and cabezon (Scoraenichthys marmotarus) also are found in the harbor during the summer. Abundant winter species include starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus) and topsmelt (Atherinops affinis). At Pillar Point Harbor, fishermen sell crab and fish catches straight off their boats at discount prices directly to the public, and restaurants will fillet the fish for purchasers.

Chasing Mavericks: A Tribute of Mavericks Greatest Surfer named JAY MORIARITY On Theaters Oct. 26, 2012

Mavericks Greatest Surfer: Jay Moriarity

Big-wave rider Jay surfed the Mavericks, the breakers up to 50ft high that crash along the Santa Cruz coast in winter.

He was just 16 and working part-time in a pizza parlour when photographer Bob Barbour took a shot that made him famous.

It made the front page of Surfer magazine and he became a hero to surfers around the world.

Then, the day before his 23rd birthday, the sea he loved claimed his life. Ironically he wasn’t surfing.

Jay drowned off the Maldives while free-diving, staying on the seabed without oxygen to practise his breathing techniques.

Kim brought his body home and scattered his ashes in the waves he worshipped as hundreds of surfers formed a vast circle of boards.

As film-makers recreated the amazing life story, Scots-born star Gerard, 42, who plays Jay’s trainer Rick “Frosty” Hessen, got a chilling reminder of the sea’s lethal power.

Swimming out to film a scene he was battered through rocks by a series of waves and held underwater for almost a minute as rescuers on jetskis raced towards him.

Gerard, barely conscious, was dragged out of the water and had to spend a night in hospital.

He says: “It was a pretty close call. These waves came out of nowhere.

“I was with three of the best surfers in the world and they were shouting, ‘Paddle, Gerry, paddle!’. But this wave spread across the skyline, 30ft high, and just dived on us and it took me. It ripped off my safety leash so there was nothing to pull me back up. I was just tumbling, tumbling, tumbling… going, going. I was thinking, ‘I need to get up!’. Then I felt the next wave hit and it all started again.

“I had a few hairy experiences in training. I got out of my depth and sometimes I was under water for 10 or 15 seconds, but this time, I was under for nearly a minute.”

Of Men and Mavericks follows the relationship between Frosty and hiseager young pupil Jay, played by newcomer Jonny Weston.

After Frosty agreed to train him he made Jay write his life philosophies. The title of one essay was prophetic: “What would I do if I was going to die tomorrow?”

Whatever Jay’s answer, the way he lived touched the lives of hundreds of surfers, many of them inspired by that iconic image of him riding the Mavericks.

Photographer Bob, 61, recalls: “The picture was not just sheer chance. Jay was out to prove himself that day. The waves were big and he was going for it. He wasn’t reckless, he was supremely skilful. He knew what he wanted to do and was determined to achieve it. When you look at him there, at the top of the wave, you see so much grace.

“In fact it wasn’t so much a natural talent with Jay, he really had to work hard at it. He was dedicated, totally.

“If he said he would see you on the beach at 7am, he’d be there at 6.30 and he’d stay until the job was done.”

Bob adds: “I’ve worked with hundreds of surfers. I know what their egos can be like. Jay was different. He was the best but he treated everyone as his equals. There was always a friendly warmth in his eyes.

“I guess it’s difficult for people outside the community to realise how there’s a special bond between surfers.

“It’s built out of a respect for the ocean, and for the way each one takes on the challenges.

“Surfers understand one another and why they do it. So the loss of someone like Jay really touched everyone’s hearts in this neighbourhood. If he had died on a big wave rather than out training, maybe that might have been easier to accept.”

When Jay died, he and Kim’s first wedding anniversary was approaching. But they were childhood sweethearts and had been together as a couple for years.

A decade on from his death, Kim, 34, has moved back to Santa Cruz and is due to remarry this year.

But Jay’s memory is, not surprisingly, still very precious and vivid.

“Sometimes I’m overwhelmed with a feeling that he’s close by. I keep his image near to my heart,” she has said. “I was just numb after he was gone. I was upside down, turned around in the dark.

“I watched him grow into what he became. Being a big-wave rider is really very cool and people idolised him.

“But meeting him on the street you would never know that. He would treat you like you were his brother or sister. He had no ego. He was just incredibly real in a world…”

Mavericks Goes Hollywood : Jay Moriarity Film

Jay Moriarity, big-wave surfer who died the summer of 2001, will be remembered in the up coming hollywood movie "Mavericks". Set to begin shooting in October the film will be based mostly on Moriarity's early life and his relationship with mentor Frosty Hesson. Producers plan to find an unknown actor to play Moriarity and costarring as Hesson will be Gerard Butler. Butler who is know for his films 300, Law Abiding Citizen and most recently The Bounty Hunter will also be the executive producer. Moriarity, who conquered Mavericks at age 15 will not only be honored through hollywood but at the renamed contest "The Jay at Maverick's".

"The Making of Chasing Mavericks"

Chasing Mavericks, A bio pic about the life of Mavericks surfer Jay Moriarity started production in October, 2011.

The film stars Gerard Butler as Frosty Hesson, Abigail Spencer as Brenda Hesson, Frosty's wife. Jonny Weston as Jay Moriarty, Elizabeth Shue as Christy Moriarty, Jays Mother; Leven Rambin as Kim Moriarty, Jay's Wife. Maya Rains plays Roque Hesson daughter for Frosty and Brenda, Patrick and Asher Tesler (twins) portray Lake, son of Frosty and Brenda.

On December 19, 2011, film star Gerard Butler escaped a near death accident while filming the movie. He was pounded by a set of 12–16 foot waves at Mavericks. Butler was held underwater for several waves and dragged through rocks until rescued by a safety worker on a jetski. According to eyeforfilm.co.uk, "Butler was knocked off his board by a freak wave. He was trapped underwater as two more waves went over him, and witnesses say he took the force of four or five waves to the head. He was also dragged through rocks before rescuers managed to reach him and get him to the shore. Butler was conscious when pulled from the water and has spent the next sixteen hours in Stanford Medical Center. No statement has been made on his condition but he is believed to have sustained only minor injuries." Butler was standing, although shaken, before being taken by the ambulance.
