Pescadero Surfing Spot

Pescadero Beach is located right next to highway 1 about 10 mile south of Half Moon Bay. At sunset the view along the rocky coastline could be quite spectacular.

This is an area of beach breaks and rocky reefs 14 miles south of Half Moon Bay. Pescadero is a very remote-feeling area of the California coast even though it’s really not that far from San Francisco or Santa Cruz. There are both beach breaks and reef breaks that you can surf all by yourself. The beach breaks are on the north end of Pescadero State Beach, and there are rocky reefs all along Pescadero Point. If there’s a swell and the wind is favorable, the surf is bound to be good somewhere in this area.

Activity Type: Surfing

Best Boards: Shortboard

Nearby City: Woodside

Elevation Gain: Minimal

Conditions: Unspecified

Skill Level: Intermediate to advanced

Hazards: Sharks

Season: Year-round

Gray Whale Cove Trail in McNee Ranch State Park

Gray Whale Cove Trail in McNee Ranch State Park

1 mile. One way. Moderate. The trail is flat once you climb the gentle
slope from the parking lot.
Park at Gray Whale Cove State Beach on the inland side of Highway One,
1.4 miles north of Montara State Beach.
Information: Half Moon Bay State Beach, (650) 726-8819

A hike on Gray Whale Cove Trail will take your breath away. Below you, the Pacific Ocean crashes against granite outcrops. To the north, looms gray-green San Pedro Mountain and inland hulks pristine Montara Mountain.
California Coastal scrub vegetation lines the trail. Look for the gray-green, thread-like leaves of coast sagebrush and the bright green, coarsely toothed leaves of coyote bush. Watch out for poison oak, which has three shiny reddish-green leaves.

Gray Whale Cove Trail is one of the best places on the Coastside to see masses of spring wildflowers such as blue Douglas irises, bright pink wild hollyhocks and glistening yellow buttercups.

The Half Moon Bay Coastside Chamber of Commerce & Visitors’ Bureau presents their 21st Tour des Fleurs on Saturday, July 21st.

Tour des Fleurs - A Unique Experience Awaits You on the Coastside

On the Coastside, we are always eager to show off our amazing flowers and plants, and Tour des Fleurs offers the public a once-a-year opportunity to tour our local nurseries/greenhouses, harbor, and farms. Many of these businesses are not ordinarily open to the public and during Tour des Fleurs they invite you for a “behind the scenes” tour of their facilities and operations. Some will share helpful tips to pruning and caring for flowers, others will share their key to an efficient operation whether it’s a nursery or winery, and some will share their colorful and fascinating family history and how it shaped their businesses today.

Special flower gardens, calla lilies, dahlias, oceans of roses and hydrangeas, organic herbs and field greens, California native plants surrounded by streams and waterfalls, a working dairy farm, grass fed livestock, a horse farm, a Coastal Farmer’s Market tour, Pillar Point Harbor and sustainable fishing, and an abundance of potted plants of every variety await you on this year’s Tour des Fleurs.

Each tour package takes you to three different nurseries. You drive yourself to each nursery in your package and enjoy a one hour guided tour. There are six different tour packages to choose from, and each tour package of three nurseries costs only $20.00. That’s right…a whole day of learning about nature for just $20.00!

Make a weekend of it! There are over 25 lodging facilities on the Coast and a wonderful variety of restaurants. Tour Half Moon Bay and the Coast, stroll our beaches, hike our trails, shop our Main Street . . . we're an unspoiled place that would love to spoil you!
